Ford is the king of SUVs. The manufacturer saw a boom in SUV production in the 1990s, and since then, it has had several SUVs that have been on top of best-seller lists again and again. As a used Ford dealer, we work with a variety of drivers, each with their own distinct needs and priorities. We’ve always succeeded at pairing drivers with used Ford SUVs that meet their specific needs and are right for the types of drives they regularly tackle. If you’re looking for a used SUV, we promise you there’s a Ford model that is right for you.

The Bronco: The Off-Road Warrior

If you’re a serious off-road enthusiast who loves style that’s both rugged and retro, the Ford Bronco might be calling your name. Originally launched in the 1960s, the Bronco is technically a heritage model. It left the Ford lineup for a while in 1996, but for 2021, Ford brought this beauty back with a bang. People missed their Bronco, and Ford answered their cries.

The modern Ford Bronco comes in two-door and four-door models, both of which have a removable roof. If you’re looking for some open-air freedom, this is your SUV. With standard four-wheel drive, beefy tires, and some impressive ground clearance, the Bronco can truly tackle any terrain. Its approach, departure, and breakover angles are some of the best in its class. Appropriately, it has the GOAT (Goes Over Any Terrain) system, with tons of standard and available drive modes like Slippery, Sand/Snow, Sport, Mud/Ruts, and even Rock Crawl. The Bronco is made for all of the unpaved places you want to go.

You’ll also find adventure-ready (and turbulence-ready) features like a MOLLE panel, perfect for attaching tools and gear from flashlights and water bottles to multi-tools and rock climbing gloves. Strategically placed grab handles give your passengers something to hang onto when the trail gets rough. Underbody steel shields will keep critical components safe when you roll over debris that comes flying up.

The Bronco Sport: Part-Time Off-Roader, Part-Time City Dweller

If the Bronco is a little too much SUV for you, check out its baby brother, the Bronco Sport. Also introduced in 2021, this subcompact SUV is energetic and efficient, boasting some of the rugged capabilities of its big sibling but blending them with more practical features and form. It has solid fuel economy figures, thanks to its lightweight frame and peppy engines. Its dimensions make it easy to get into tight parking spots and maneuver on busy city streets.

What about off-road powers? The Bronco Sport has standard four-wheel drive, so it can handle slippery roads. It has its own GOAT modes, too—they’re just a bit reduced compared to the Bronco. But you can expect Normal for daily driving, Sport for a spirited feel, Eco for the best fuel efficiency, and Slippery for wet roads. This baby Bronco even has some modest towing figures and is ready to drag a small boat or camper out to your destination.

Feel free to get messy because you’ll find rubberized interior parts from floor mats to wall protectors and seatback protectors all over this model. So go ahead and hop in with your muddy boots, or let your four-legged companions jump in after swimming in a lake. A couple of special touches, like a bottle opener built into the trunk and cargo tie-down carabiner hooks and loops, reveal the camping trip-ready nature of this fun little SUV. It even has front tow hooks on select models, so a buddy can help pull you out of a rut.

The Escape: The Compact Commuter

The Escape is a beloved compact SUV that’s been on the road since 2001 and is versatile, fuel-efficient, and packed with convenient features. However, the biggest selling point for this one is its fuel economy. That’s because the Escape is available not only in traditional gas engine models (that already see solid fuel economy) but also in hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants. If you’ve been interested in moving into the EV space, the Escape is worth checking out. The hybrid lets you send power to its battery via regenerative braking, while the plug-in hybrid adds the option to plug in at a charging station along with the other EVs.

What many drivers appreciate about the Escape is its impressively spacious interior. It might be a small SUV, but it doesn’t feel small on the inside. In fact, it has rear seats that both slide and recline, making it easy for backseat passengers to get comfortable for long rides. Or, when the rear seats are empty, slide them up and fold them down to expand the trunk area. This model can even tow up to 3,500 lbs with the optional 2.0L EcoBoost engine that was introduced in 2013, so it can serve as your camping/adventure vehicle on the weekends.

Inside the Escape, you’ll find lots of comfort and convenience features commuters will love, like heated components, available contoured bucket seats, and a center console for stashing small essentials. The Escape also has a terrific suite of driver-assist features to help you stay in command no matter where you drive. These features, like automatic braking, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, and a rearview camera, can help you stay more alert on the road and reduce the chances of collisions.

The Explorer: The People Hauler

Need seating for seven? Then you should be looking at the Explorer, a comfortable, safe, and spacious three-row SUV that’s been part of the Ford lineup since 1991. This is one of Ford’s most popular people haulers, thanks to loads of thoughtful features throughout the cabin that keep all three rows of passengers content. Let’s start with the power outlets and ports, of which there are plenty, so nobody has to fight over who gets to charge their phone next. The available Wi-Fi hotspot can connect up to 10 devices at once, meaning everyone can play games, stream shows, handle homework, answer emails, and more on the road.

As luck would have it, there is even a hybrid available for the 2020 to 2024 model years. So you can have your cake and eat it, too, enjoying the power of a big SUV with great fuel economy. Speaking of power, the Explorer can tow up to 5,600 lbs, making it a terrific road trip vehicle and great for taking the boat out to the lake. The available voice-activated navigation can help you find those destinations, pulling up directions for you so you can keep your hands on the wheel. The rear seats of the Explorer are easy to configure in many ways, letting you create the passenger or cargo space you need from one day to the next.
